Afc Wimbledon And The Drop The Dons Campaign

EDM number 2643 in 2010-12, proposed by Siobhain McDonagh on 24/01/2012.
Categorised under the topic of Sports.

That this House welcomes the Drop the Dons campaign launched by the Wimbledon Guardian, which calls for Milton Keynes Dons FC to remove Dons fromits name; believes that such a move would recognise the achievement of AFC Wimbledon, the original Dons, for rising in just nine years from the bottom of the football pyramid to the Football League in the best possible way, by promotion on merit; notes that AFC Wimbledon was established when local fans set up their own community club after the football authorities' decision to allow Wimbledon FC to move its franchise to Milton Keynes in 2002, a decision that continues to cause much anger within the football community; and believes that by removing Dons fromits name, Milton KeynesDons FC will remove much of the stigma associated with that club and giveit a greater opportunity to attract more local support.
