That this House notes the service done by civilian and military humanitarian workers deployed by the Government in humanitarian and disaster relief operations across the globe and the many thousands of lives saved by these operations; further notes the work of the UK Fire andRescue Service and civilians from the Department for International Development and the UKCivilian Stabilisation Unit after the Haitian earthquake and in Japan after the recent tsunami, and involvement of the UK Armed Forces in recent humanitarian responses such as in Pakistan last year when they flew in emergency bridges to flood zones, reconnecting stranded communities; acknowledges that in the last decade over 700 international humanitarian workers have lost their lives and many more have been injured or kidnapped; recognises that overseas development contributes to conflict resolution, global stability and is firmly in the UK's national interest; and calls for the Government to institute a humanitarian operational service medal torecognise the professionalism and bravery of those who have been engaged in humanitarian operations.
