Golden Temple Of Amritsar: Reflections Of The Past Exhibition

EDM number 2249 in 2010-12, proposed by John McDonnell on 13/10/2011.
Categorised under the topic of Religion and faith communities.

That this House congratulates the UK Punjab Heritage Association (UKPHA) on its stunning recent major exhibition, The Golden Temple of Amritsar: Reflections of the Past at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, which has been the most successful exhibition at the Brunei Gallery in the last decade and its third most popular ever; notes that the Golden Temple, or Harimandir Sahib, Sikhism's most sacred shrine and epicentre of the world's fifth largest religion is a universal place of pilgrimage for peoples of all faiths and none, is visited by more people than the Taj Mahal and that the exhibition itself was visited by nearly 22,000 visitors highlighting both its broad appeal to UK Punjabis and Sikhs as well as to the wider community; further notes the expertise and effort of the UKPHA, its team of volunteers and the Gallery in putting on this world-class exhibition and series of symposiums with international speakers and performers; looks forward to further projects from the UKPHA, a voluntary community-based body which exemplifies the ideals and best practice of the third sector and the Big Society, its social enterprise publishing wing Kashi House and their GT1588.com initiative; and wholeheartedly endorses their aims to showcase the very best in Sikh and Punjabi culture and heritage on the world stage and, in the interest of inter-faith understanding, make Sikh philosophy and traditions more accessible to anyone with an affinity for, or interest in, Indian culture.
