Un Summit On Non-Communicable Diseases

EDM number 2193 in 2010-12, proposed by Keith Vaz on 15/09/2011.
Categorised under the topics of Diseases, Health education and preventive medicine, Obesity and United Nations.

That this House notes the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon's statement that non-communicable diseases (NCD) represent a `public health emergency in slow motion'; welcomes the decision by the Secretary of State for Health to attend the UN Summit on NCDs on 19 and 20 September 2011; further notes that obesity is now a global pandemic fuelling NCDs such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer; further notes that without action obesity-related diseases will cost the UK 45 billion a year; calls for the Secretary of State for Health to bring the obesity crisis to the top of the Summit agenda; and urges the Government to support the call for time-bound commitments and targets to tackle the NCD epidemic.

This motion has been signed by a total of 13 MPs.
