Enquiry Into Government Relations With Libya 2001 To 2010
EDM number 2143 in 2010-12, proposed by Robert Halfon on 06/09/2011.
Categorised under the topics of International politics and government and Middle East.
That this House notes with serious concern reports about the last administration's relations with Colonel Gaddafi's regime, which became too close, especially in the area of the security services, major business agreements, and our universities; further notes in particular that relations became too close with Saif Gaddafi; further notes that members of the security services allegedly passed on details of Libyan dissidents to Colonel Gaddafi, and despite assurances from the former Foreign Secretary, that Britain appears to have been involved in extraordinary rendition; further notes that the Labour Government supported the release of the convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi on the promise of oil deals; finally notes that many UK academic institutions took millions of pounds in donations and contracts from Gaddafi's regime; and therefore calls for much stricter conditions on the kind of regimes that the UK is prepared to deal with in the future, and for an enquiry into the last administration's relations with Libya from 2001 to 2010.
