Explosion At Cyprus Naval Base

That this House sends condolences to the island of Cyprus and its people, particularly to the families and friends of those who have died or been injured in the explosion at the Cyprus naval base on the south coast of Cyprus, the family of the navy commander who is among the 12 people known to have died, to the 62 people injured in the explosion, to those affected in the nearby villages of Mari and Zygi, and to those working in the island's main power station nearby which was affected causing widespread power cuts; understands that the Cyprus government has declared a three-day mourning period with all flags flying at half mast; regrets the circumstances of the containers being confiscated from the Cypriot-flagged ship, Monchegorsk; hopes that the Government can offer expertise, if required, to determine the exact cause of the explosion and the appropriateness of the storage of such material on the island; welcomes the appointment of an inquiry committee to investigate the events which led to the deadly explosion; and requests the Government either directly or through the EU to respond with urgency to any requests from the Cyprus government for assistance with the investigation or support to repair the damage after the explosion.
