Space Science Contribution To The British Economy

EDM number 2091 in 2010-12, proposed by David Morris on 14/07/2011.
Categorised under the topics of Economic situation and Research and innovation.

That this House notes that space science and exploration, an area of world leadership in the UK's science base, has delivered significant long-term economic benefits, in addition to delivering inspirational scientific results; further notes that whilst these economic benefits have not been widely reported, the technological innovations arising from the scientific space missions are now used routinely in modern communication satellites, including TV and broadband, satellite navigation and terrestrial applications; believes that the technologies currently under development have direct and indirect potential for business, education and security; further believes that any moves to ensure growth in the UK space economy must include the space science and exploration industry as it is vital to support this important source of innovation in order to guarantee the UK's technological advantage over other countries in the foreseeable future; and requests that the Government take all available steps to support this vital business.
