Review Of The Role Of The Care Quality Commission
EDM number 1927 in 2010-12, proposed by Jim Cunningham on 15/06/2011.
Categorised under the topic of Elderly people.
That this House notes that the Government has reduced money available to the Care Quality Commission (CQC); further notes that there is a national crisis of confidence in this organisation's ability to deliver on its functions; welcomes local news investigations like that of the Coventry Telegraph which hashighlighted the issue; recognises that the Department of Health had introduced a recruitment freeze to the CQC which leaves 282 posts vacant; further notes with concern that this excludes 113 inspectors; further notes that recruitment has begun at a rate which is not meeting demand; expresses concern at the health and safety implications for thousands of residents; further notes that subsequent action taken by the CQC following unsatisfactory inspections is not made clear to the general public; and calls on the Government to review the effectiveness of the CQC, and to encourage local authorities and the CQC to be transparent in their approach to reassuring residents, their relatives, and the public that essential follow-up action is taken in a respectable amount of time for those care homes which receive poor ratings.
