EDM number 1822 in 2010-12, proposed by Peter Bottomley on 17/05/2011.

That this House notes the value over many decades of US Department of State exchange programmes which have taken thousands of individuals from around the world to the US to meet a wide variety of official and non-governmental organisations as well as ordinary people to discuss a wide range of foreign policy issues; believes that this has done much to allow people, who often go on to take leading roles in their society, to learn from America and for America to engage with and learn from their guests; further notes that alumni and alumnae of these programmes in the UK include several former prime ministers and trade union, business and civic leaders; and warmly welcomes the formation of the John Adams Society which brings together individuals who have participated in US Department of State exchange programmes through the US Embassy in London, an association that works to foster mutual understanding amongst the British and American governments and their citizens, whilst strengthening the network of individuals.
