Daily Mirror Campaign On Employee Rights
EDM number 1368 in 2010-12, proposed by Chuka Umunna on 31/01/2011.
Categorised under the topic of Employment.
That this House supports the Daily Mirror's Gizza Proper Job campaign to end the scourge of bogus self-employment; notes the hundreds of thousands of British people who work day in, day out, for the same boss are currently denied the most basic rights liked paid holiday, sick pay, redundancy and the minimum wage; applauds the Daily Mirror for highlighting how weak and confusing the rules on who is self-employed are, and which are exploited by unscrupulous employers who casualise their workforce and avoid national insurance contributions; further notes that the cost to the Exchequer of bogus self-employment is likely to run into billions of pounds; and calls on all workers to be declared employees unless that are genuinely self-employed.
