Irish Language Legislation

EDM number 1348 in 2010-12, proposed by Margaret Ritchie on 26/01/2011.
Categorised under the topic of Northern Ireland.

That this House calls on the Government to fulfil, within an agreed timescale, the unequivocal commitment made in Appendix B of the St Andrews Agreement of October 2006, to introduce an Irish Language Act reflecting on the experience of Wales and Ireland and work with the incoming executive to enhance and protect the development of the Irish language in Northern Ireland; notes the overwhelming community support for Irish language legislation in two formal Government consultations in 2006-07; and is concerned that Northern Ireland is the only part of these islands where there is no domestic legislation in place for the primary indigenous language.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
