Liverpool And The Blitz
EDM number 1103 in 2010-12, proposed by Steve Rotheram on 29/11/2010.

That this House notes that the Western Approaches Command HQ was moved from Plymouth to Liverpool on 7 February 1941, instigated by the fact that German aircraft and U-boats were attacking ships travelling to Britain from the French coast, and closed on 15 August 1945; further notes that throughout the years of the Second World War, Liverpool was Britain's main convoy port, maintaining the vital lifeline with the US and Canada, which was crucial both for Britain's survival and the ultimate Allied victory; further notesthat over 1,000 convoys arrived in the Mersey, on average three or four per week, with many warships and merchant ships repaired and built on Merseyside; acknowledges that this obviously made Liverpool Docks a major target for the Luftwaffe, and that Liverpool was the second most bombed city after London; further notes that on the night of 29 November 1940 the biggest single tragedy to befall the city occurred when there was a direct hit on the large underground shelter in Durning Road, Edge Hill, crushing many of its 300 occupants and resulting in the deaths of 166 people with many more badly injured; further notes the sacrifices of the people of Merseyside during this period; and recognises the strategic importance of the city to Britain's ultimate victory.
