Diabetes Care In Residential Care
EDM number 1002 in 2010-12, proposed by Adrian Sanders on 12/11/2010.
Categorised under the topics of Diseases and Elderly people.
That this House welcomes Diabetes UK's report Awareness, screening, training in the care of people with diabetes in residential care; notes with concern the findings of the report that one person is admitted to hospital with diabetes every 25 minutes from residential care and that without urgent action to improve care for people with the condition the frequency of such admissions will increase to one every 10 minutes by 2051; is concerned that not all care homes are screening people on admission or at two-yearly intervals for diabetes, resulting in as many as 13,500 older people in care homes whose diabetes is undiagnosed and whose needs are not being met; believes that all people with diabetes living in care homes should have an individualised care plan to ensure their needs are met and that care home managers should put in place appropriate diabetes-specific training for all staff involved in the care of residents with the condition; and urges all care homes to adopt the Good Clinical Practice guidelines for care home residents with diabetes published by Diabetes UK to help improve care for people with diabetes in residential care.
