Team Gb 2012
EDM number 939 in 2009-10, proposed by George Galloway on 25/02/2010.
Categorised under the topic of Sports.
That this House is extremely concerned by recent reports that UK Olympic officials, including those from UK Sport, estimate that more than a third of athletes in Team GB at the 2012 Games are likely to come from fee-paying educational backgrounds; notes that only seven per cent. of the populace attends fee-paying schools; expresses disappointment that the fine aspiration of Team 2012 to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind appears to have been dashed; and requests that the Government do everything possible to democratise and widen access to both elite and grassroots sports, in line with the pledges of the Olympic bid.
