Fishmeal In Organic Feed
EDM number 935 in 2009-10, proposed by Lembit Opik on 24/02/2010.
Categorised under the topic of Organic farming.
That this House notes with concern that the use of fishmeal in organic pig and poultry feed damages the ecosystem through trawlers damaging aquatic reefs and plants, causes a sharp decline in the population of fish due to industrial fishing techniques and damages the environment due to the significant carbon footprint caused by fishing boats; believes that its inclusion reduces the organic content of animal feed to below 90 per cent. whereas the minimum is ruled to be 95 per cent. from 1 January 2010 due to the reclassification of fish as a non-agricultural ingredient and therefore not subject to the non-organic feed allowance of five per cent.; and further believes that by continuing to include fishmeal in organic food the environment and ecosystem are being harmed and the ethos of organics is not being adhered to.
