Retrospective Application Of The Law On Property Permits In Spain

EDM number 1242 in 2009-10, proposed by Bob Russell on 07/04/2010.
Categorised under the topics of Planning and Western Europe.

That this House calls on the Spanish government to reach a settlement with UK property owners affected by the decision to issue judicial instructions of arbitrary cancellation and retrospective application of the law on permits to build, rendering a number of properties to be retrospectively judged to be illegal; urges the Spanish government to offer compensation for financial losses incurred by UK property owners or alternatively to issue a moratorium on demolitions until a mutual settlement is reached in cases when property owned by British citizens is subjected to demolition orders or financial penalties for allegedly breaching building regulations; and further calls on the Government to offer advice to UK citizens and to urge the Spanish government to accept that property erected in what at the time was deemed to have been through legal means should be secure, without the threat of loss or demolition when faced with retrospective law changes.
