Public Holidays In Chubut Province
EDM number 1086 in 2009-10, proposed by Hywel Williams on 15/03/2010.
Categorised under the topic of International politics and government.
That this House welcomes the efforts of the Chubut Provincial government in Argentina to increase the number of school days in the year, but calls on it to reject plans to scrap provincial holidays on 28 July and 30 April, which celebrate two of the most important events in the development of the modern day Chubut Province, the landing of the first Welsh immigrants in Patagonia on 28 July 1865 and the referendum held on 30 April 1902 in which the predominantly Welsh residents of Cwm Hyfryd decided that the Cordillera de los Andes would remain part of Argentina rather than be transferred to Chile; notes that while both dates are occasions which are of specific importance to the Welsh community in the Chubut Province, they are also important commemorative occasions for Chubut's population as a whole and should remain as provincial holidays; believes that the continued links between Wales and the Chubut are of great cultural importance to residents of both locations; and hopes that the recent actions of the UK Border Agency in preventing Welsh learners from the Chubut from entering the UK has not damaged relationships in any way between Wales and the Chubut.
