Nuclear Disarmament
EDM number 891 in 2008-09, proposed by Dai Davies on 25/02/2009.
Categorised under the topic of Arms control.
That this House notes that in an editorial published on 24 February 2009 in the New York Times, entitled, When Nuclear Subs Collide, the newspaper concluded that governments should eliminate thousands of nuclear weapons that no longer have any military justification and should insist on the highest possible safety standards; believes that this reflects the spirit of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, for which the United Kingdom, with the United States, is a depositary state; further notes that the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs told the hon. Member for Islington North in Foreign and Commonwealth Office topical questions on 24 February 2009 that `this country and this Government are the most forward-leaning of the nuclear weapon states in terms of disarmament'; and therefore calls on the Government to enter current British nuclear weapons of mass destruction into nuclear disarmament negotiations.
