That this House notes that in early February 2009 Somerset experienced its heaviest snowfalls for 27 years; congratulates the staff of Somerset County Council Highways Department and its contractors WS Atkins, on their efforts to keep open as much of the road network in Somerset as viable; further notes that from 1 February 2009 to 9 February 2009 around 3,500 tonnes of salt were used in Somerset to treat and re-treat some 40,000 kilometres of roads, which is the approximate circumference of the earth; welcomes Somerset County Council's recent £1 million investment in new winter service equipment; and thanks all the staff in Somerset and across the United Kingdom who have worked hard and in difficult conditions to keep roads and footpaths safe.
