That this House warmly welcomes the priority accorded to strengthening the global nuclear non-proliferation regime by Senator Hillary Clinton in her confirmation hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on 13 January; notes that she identified the Non-Proliferation Treaty as the cornerstone of the non-proliferation regime, and the importance of leadership being exercised by the Obama administration to shore it up; understands why Mrs Clinton asserted that the gravest threat faced by America is the danger that weapons of mass destruction will fall into the hands of terrorists; agrees that it is essential that the spread and use of those weapons must be curbed and prevented; supports her prioritisation of promoting the parallel opportunity to get America back in the business of engaging other nations to reduce nuclear stockpiles; welcomes her commitment to work with the US Senate towards ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and to dedicate efforts to revive negotiations on a verifiable Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty; and calls upon the Government to join the Obama administration in achieving these national security goals.
