ROYAL SOCIETY OF CHEMISTRY'S YEAR OF FOOD

That this House congratulates the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) on the forthcoming publication of their joint report about science and food entitled the Vital Ingredient; notes that the launch of this major report is on 21 January at the House with the President of the RSC, Professor Dave Garner and the President of the IChemE, Professor Richard Darton; congratulates those involved in producing this report including the Chair of the Joint RSC-IChemE Steering Committee, Professor Peter Lillford, and the report's co-authors Dr Farrah Bhatti and Dr Philippa Bell; notes that the keynote address at the launch is being given by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; further notes the contributions of Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Council of Food Policy Advisers, the hon. Member for North East Milton Keynes, Shadow International Development Minister and the right hon. Member for Fylde, Chair of the Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; applauds the RSC for its role in highlighting the important connection between food security, climate change and the availability of water and energy as inter-linked issues; and notes that 2009 is the RSC's designated Year of Food which aims to raise awareness of the vital role of the chemical sciences in all aspects of food.
