London Declaration On Mental Health Research In The UK
EDM number 2049 in 2008-09, proposed by Lynne Jones on 14/10/2009.
Categorised under the topic of Mental health.
That this House supports the London Declaration of 14 October 2009 on mental health research in the UK, which highlights that mental ill health is a leading cause of suffering, economic loss, social problems and death in the UK; points out that only proper investment in mental health research will bring major breakthroughs and that research on mental illness is still massively under-resourced compared to research for major physical illness despite causing a comparable or larger disease burden; and calls on the Government, the NHS, research funding bodies, research institutions, the pharmaceutical industry and the third sector to commit to a joint strategy to rectify this, including increasing the proportion of research money spent on mental health research, supporting, publicising and resourcing mental health research and continuing to invest in the skills and understanding necessary to develop strong research proposals.
