Policing In Manchester
EDM number 2034 in 2008-09, proposed by Tony Lloyd on 13/10/2009.
Categorised under the topic of Police.
That this House congratulates Chief Superintendent Gerry Donnellan and the officers of Greater Manchester Police for their successful handling of events in Manchester on 10 October 2009 concerning the English Defence League; notes that there was very little trouble given the number of people involved because of the well thought through actions of the police and the restraint of the people of Manchester; reiterates that the English Defence League is an unacceptable organisation seeking to promote inter-communal intolerance, and has no place in a tolerant and multi-ethnic Manchester; welcomes the advice from community leaders, faith leaders and trade unionists for the people of Manchester to avoid confrontation; and notes that advice was overwhelmingly accepted.
