Selective Mutism
EDM number 186 in 2008-09, proposed by Mark Williams on 08/12/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Children and families and Health education and preventive medicine.
That this House acknowledges the difficulties faced by children with selective mutism, an anxiety disorder in which affected children develop a phobia of speaking in certain situations; notes that selective mutism can make it difficult for children to reach their full academic potential in areas where communication with teachers and other pupils is vital; recognises that early identification of selectively mute children is essential in helping overcome the disorder; and welcomes the success of Selective Mutism Awareness Week, which will help parents, teachers and other educational professionals to be able to identify selective mutism at an early stage.
