Ofcom Consumer Guide And The Byron Review
EDM number 1512 in 2008-09, proposed by Keith Vaz on 18/05/2009.
Categorised under the topics of Children and families and Internet and cybercrime.
That this House warmly welcomes the news that Ofcom has published a consumer guide directed towards helping parents to restrict what their children see either on television or online; is concerned that nearly 50 per cent. of children aged between eight and 11 years and approximately two-thirds of those aged 12 to 15 years use the internet mostly without adult supervision; wholeheartedly agrees with the Byron Review's recommendation that families, the industry and Government all need to play a role in restricting the availability of and access that children and young people have to potentially harmful material; and calls on the Government to implement the Byron Review in full, allowing young people to reap the benefits of living in a digital age whilst limiting their exposure to material deemed inappropriate or damaging.
