World Intellectual Property Day

EDM number 1398 in 2008-09, proposed by Janet Anderson on 29/04/2009.
Categorised under the topic of Intellectual property.

That this House notes that 26 April 2009 was World Intellectual Property Day; welcomes this year's focus on green innovation; celebrates the enormous contribution intellectual property (IP) makes to the economy and our way of life; further notes that the creative industries alone contribute over 8.2 per cent. of gross domestic product and that at least as much again can be added to the contribution of other industries which rely on IP, such as brand manufacturing; recognises that industries dependent on IP, such as film, publishing, music, design, sports broadcasting, brand manufacturing, games software and computer software sustain countless jobs in every parliamentary constituency; believes these industries have an increasingly important role in the current economic climate; and urges the Government to work to maintain a robust system of copyright, trade marks, design rights and patents which rewards creativity, provides consumer choice and safeguards the millions of jobs which depend on IP.
