Extreme Solar Weather

EDM number 1187 in 2008-09, proposed by Graham Stringer on 25/03/2009.
Categorised under the topic of Electricity.

That this House notes that a repeat of the 1859 Carrington event, an ejection of solar plasma, which hit the earth and caused severe disruption to the telegraph system, could knock out the National Grid, which would lead to a loss of water supply, transport and food, and therefore create a national emergency; and calls on the Government to make contingency plans for such an event.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
