Care Of Elderly Disabled People

EDM number 1028 in 2008-09, proposed by Bob Spink on 10/03/2009.
Categorised under the topics of Community care and Sickness, disability and carers' benefits.

That this House congratulates Counsel and Care, Carers UK and Help the Aged on their work to get the right deal for carers; further congratulates informal carers, many of whom are on call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year; believes that the current economic crisis and low interest rates may deter people from saving to fund their future social care; notes that many carers, such as students and carers aged over 65, are ineligible for support and that almost two million disabled people over 65 years receive no state-funded care and rely on informal care and that this figure is set to grow to 2.6 million by 2022; is concerned that three quarters of local authorities only provide care to people whose needs are critical or substantial; and calls on the Government to review carer and benefits policy to ensure that vulnerable people get the care they need.

This motion has been signed by a total of 46 MPs.
