Radio Jackie 40th Birthday

EDM number 1027 in 2008-09, proposed by Paul Burstow on 10/03/2009.
Categorised under the topic of Broadcasting.

That this House congratulates Radio Jackie on its 40th birthday; recognises the hard work and dedication of the individuals at the station, which first broadcast in Sutton four decades ago for just 30 minutes and then went on to pioneer local radio in South West London; recognises that during its years as a pirate station it was a significant and dedicated fundraiser, and commends all those who raised vital funds for many local causes; applauds the fact that in March 1972 Radio Jackie was played in Parliament as an example of the potential of local radio during the committee stage of the Sound Broadcasting Bill; notes that the station launched the careers of Paul McKenna and Dave Pearce; commends the station for the widespread support it received in seeking a licence during the 1980s, including a 55,000 strong petition; and further recognises the decades of determination by the station to gain a licence and the commitment of the original management team who came back together to re-launch the station officially in February 2003 so that once again Radio Jackie is providing communities across South West London with music, valuable local news and charitable support.
