Isle Of Barra: Community Of The Year Winner

EDM number 100 in 2008-09, proposed by Angus MacNeil on 03/12/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Countryside and Cultural heritage.

That this House warmly congratulates the community of the Island of Barra, in the constituency of Na h-Eileanan an Iar, for being adjudged the Community of the Year in a UK-wide competition at the Guildhall in London sponsored by Calor Gas; notes that the island is famous for its Gaelic culture, history and landscape of mountains and beaches; further notes that the island airport is the only commercial airport in the world that uses a beach, which can be viewed clearly on Google Earth; and further notes that owing to the introduction of road equivalent tariff, ferry fares have dropped dramatically, making Barra, once the backdrop for the famous Ealing Studios film Whisky Galore, and the Outer Hebrides generally, both an ideal and affordable holiday location in times of the credit crunch.

This motion has been signed by a total of 31 MPs.
