Increase In Football Players From Overseas (No. 2)
EDM number 855 in 2007-08, proposed by Jeremy Browne on 04/02/2008.
Categorised under the topic of Sports.
That this House celebrates the contribution of professional foreign footballers now playing in England; marvels at the skills of top class foreign players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Cesc Fabregas and Akos Buzsaky; believes that their footballing flair, technical ability and tactical acumen have all helped to make English football more entertaining, less parochial and better; further celebrates the wider success of the liberal principles of free trade, open markets and internationalism embodied by the introduction of foreign players; does not believe that these principles should be compromised by excessive regulation from the Government; and rejects the notion that foreign footballers harm the success of the England national team because the top English players on whom success depends such as Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand are good enough to prosper despite the increased competition from foreign players and actually benefit from training and playing with them on a regular basis.
