Labelling System On Bottles And Cans Of Alcohol To Show Unit Strength
EDM number 799 in 2007-08, proposed by Tobias Ellwood on 28/01/2008.
That this House expresses concern that the number of binge drinkers in the UK is now over 5.9 million and around 20,000 deaths are linked annually to alcohol misuse; notes Government guidelines that males should not drink more than 21 units a week and females more than 14 units; further notes that the strength and variety of alcoholic drinks available can prevent drinkers from easily calculating the number of units consumed; and encourages breweries and alcohol manufacturers to introduce a standardised labelling system on bottles and cans of alcohol which clearly indicate the total number of units the drink contains and if appropriate the number of units per serving.
