Reduced Ignition Propensity Cigarettes
EDM number 649 in 2007-08, proposed by David Taylor on 08/01/2008.
That this House welcomes the efforts of the Government in promoting reduced ignition propensity cigarettes across the European Union; notes that this innovative cigarette design will reduce domestic fire deaths by up to two-thirds and prevent much of the devastation and injury currently caused, disproportionately in low income and pensioner households; supports the latest proposal to introduce the standard across the United Kingdom ahead of the rest of Europe; calls upon the Government to lobby for a standard consistent with that currently used by all other jurisdictions that have adopted reduced ignition propensity cigarettes, making it easier and cheaper for manufacturers to comply with and for the Government to acknowledge that the development of an alternative standard will only lead to unnecessary delays and avoidable deaths.
