British National Anthem

EDM number 509 in 2007-08, proposed by Greg Mulholland on 06/12/2007.
Categorised under the topics of Arts, Cultural heritage and Nationality.

That this House notes the remarks of former Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, that the sixth and final verse of the British National Anthem `God Save the Queen' makes reference to `crushing rebellious Scots'; believes that use of this language is inappropriate, offensive and damaging in an anthem meant to represent an inclusive Union and bind the people of the United Kingdom together; and further believes that this verse should be formally dropped from God Save the Queen in all future versions.
