Funding For The Special Olympics

EDM number 2551 in 2007-08, proposed by Mark Durkan on 24/11/2008.
Categorised under the topic of Sports.

That this House recognises the huge contribution of the Special Olympics movement in transforming the lives of intellectually disabled athletes by providing year-round sports training and athletic competitions through which they can nurture and develop their athletic abilities; notes that providing these services at local, national and international levels requires significant funding; further notes that Special Olympics Europe Eurasia is seeking financial assistance from the European Commission to fund the European Special Olympic Summer Games in Warsaw in 2010 and the World Special Olympic Summer Games in Athens in 2011; acknowledges the many opportunities and benefits for athletes, families and the wider community that will result from these events taking place in the EU; further acknowledges the reciprocal benefits to the European Commission in terms of delivering on its priorities for volunteering development, social inclusion, integration and equal opportunities; and therefore urges the Government to fully support Special Olympics Europe and Eurasia in these events by doing all it can to ensure that appropriate funding is provided by the European Commission.
