British Cycling And Cycle Racing On Highways Regulations
EDM number 2231 in 2007-08, proposed by Andrew George on 13/10/2008.
Categorised under the topic of Sports.
That this House congratulates all involved in the organisation British Cycling for the outstanding success of British competitors in the summer Olympics and acknowledges the remarkable work of volunteers in building up the standards of competitive cycling in Britain; notes the challenges currently faced by the organisers of cycle events on the highway; believes that properly accredited volunteers associated with reputable cycling organisations should be permitted to act as stewards for such events and that there should be consistency in charging by police forces for services in connection with cycling races; and therefore calls upon the Government to update the Cycle Racing on the Highways Regulations, amend the Police Reform Act 2002 and encourage a UK-wide agreement between British Cycling and the Association of Chief Police Officers in order to create a positive environment for the promotion of cycling events in the UK.
