SWIMMING TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION

EDM number 2089 in 2007-08, proposed by Bruce George on 17/07/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Sports and Teachers.

That this House congratulates the Swimming Teachers' Association (STA) on its record of over 75 years saving lives by the teaching of swimming, lifesaving and survival techniques; notes that as a registered charity which receives no Government funding, the Association still trains over 35,000 swimming teachers worldwide, lifeguards and lifesavers, first aiders and pool plant operatives each year, confirming its position as a key stakeholder; observes that the Association also promotes, assesses and recognises the swimming skills of children and adults, both able bodied and disabled, through the award of almost One Million Learn to Swim badges each year; records that STA courses and examinations are now used in 25 countries worldwide; and welcomes the major contribution made by the Association to public safety standards, swimming training, the provision of water safety knowledge, reducing death by drowning and improved public health.
