Future Of Local Newspapers

EDM number 2049 in 2007-08, proposed by Bob Russell on 15/07/2008.
Categorised under the topic of Press.

That this House greatly values local newspapers, both weekly titles and those published daily; believes that they play a vital role in social cohesion and the democratic process through engagement of residents in their local communities and the reporting of matters of local interest and concern, ranging from subjects of social interaction to those involving local authorities and from the 1,001 matters of neighbourhood news to the economic well-being of communities through the advertising medium which local newspapers offer; is deeply alarmed that the worsening financial situation confronting the local newspaper industry has led to a reduction in the amount of news coverage and that in some cases the possible loss of titles is a real threat; and calls on the Government to engage with the local newspaper industry to ascertain what steps can be taken to ensure the survival and prosperity of local newspapers in the best interests of the local communities which they serve.
