BROADCAST OR PUBLICATION OF MURDERERS' MATERIAL
EDM number 179 in 2007-08, proposed by Rudi Vis on 08/11/2007.
Categorised under the topics of Broadcasting, Crime, Internet and cybercrime and Media.
That this House notes the pattern of many recent mass murderers and suicide bombers making or featuring in video recordings or other communications by which they intend to gain personal exposure following the crime, for example suicide bombings and school and college mass shootings, including the Virginia Tech and Jokela, Finland killings; believes that such public exposure does much more to incentivise similar future crimes than prevent them, as well as causing offence to the relatives of victims; and therefore condemns the broadcast or publication of such material by news agencies and via internet hosting agencies, including of still images of suicide murderers taken from such material, with rare if any exemptions.
