That this House is concerned at reported Home Office plans to include provisions in the forthcoming Communications Data Bill to create a database of electronic information holding details of every telephone call and e-mail sent in the UK; believes that such a step is incompatible with the concept of a free society and is an unnecessary and draconian measure; recognises the Government's recent appalling record in its handling of recorded personal information and the risk of identity fraud that this poses; and calls on the Government to abandon these plans immediately.
