Border Between Spain And Gibraltar
EDM number 1522 in 2007-08, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 08/05/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Armed forces, NATO, North America, Overseas territories and Western Europe.
That this House notes with concern that excessive Spanish restrictions enforced at the Spain-Gibraltar border delayed the arrival of vital equipment needed by the US nuclear submarine USS Florida, and that Spain continues to impose unwarranted restrictions on both military and civilian freight moving in both directions across the Gibraltar border; further notes that the limitations are contrary to the North Atlantic Treaty and threaten to escalate to a diplomatic issue between Spain and the UK and the USA; calls on the Government to act on reports released from the Foreign Affairs Select Committee in March citing an increase of such incidents; and asks the Government to increase pressure on Spain to recognise the legitimacy of Gibraltar's role as a port for military vessels and to revise the policy decision in place surrounding military freight crossing the border.
