That this House welcomes the British Medical Association report, Alcohol misuse: tackling the UK epidemic; expresses concern about problematic levels of alcohol misuse in the UK; acknowledges that the report is not intended to assail those who enjoy consuming alcohol in moderation; notes the BMA's recommendation that taxation on all alcoholic beverages needs to be increased if alcohol consumption and its related harms are to be reduced; agrees with the BMA that irresponsible price promotions on alcoholic beverages in licensed premises and off-licences ought to be prohibited; welcomes a ban on alcohol advertising prior to 9pm and in cinemas for films with a certificate below age 18; supports a reduction in the legal limit for the level of alcohol permitted while driving from 80mg/100ml to 50mg/100ml; and further supports the BMA's call for the introduction of routine screening and management of alcohol misuse in primary or secondary care.
