Cost Of Dementia

That this House welcomes the Alzheimer's Society report Dementia UK, which highlights the continued and rising prevalence, cost and impact of dementia on those with the condition and their families and carers; recognises that more than one in 10 people suffer dementia at some point in their lives; notes with concern that the cost to the UK economy of dementia is £18 billion a year; expresses its concern that by 2051 over 1.7 million people will suffer from dementia, a rise of 154 per cent.; welcomes the report's recommendations to make dementia a national priority for 2007, prioritise further funding and support into dementia care and research into the causes, prevention and cure in the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review, include dementia care training in the National Minimum Standards for nurses and social care staff, develop better community support to help those suffering dementia in the home, guarantee support for family carers, establish comprehensive care models for treatment in the home and in care homes and hold a national debate on how the costs of dementia care should be split between the state and the individual; and calls on the Government to act on these recommendations.
