No Smoking Day Campaign

EDM number 976 in 2006-07, proposed by Ian Gibson on 26/02/2007.

That this House notes that the No Smoking Day health awareness campaign will run on Wednesday 14th March 2007 using the strap line `Make a fresh start'; congratulates the charity No Smoking Day, who run the national campaign, in its 24th year; expresses concern for the 116,000 deaths caused by smoking in the UK each year; notes that one in two smokers will die prematurely as a result of using tobacco; further notes that 70 per cent. of smokers want to stop smoking and need help and support to do that; recognises that the UK's smoking cessation services are world class and smokers in this country who use these services are four times more likely to quit smoking; and supports this vital campaign to help and support smokers to quit.
