Welsh Dairy Farmers And Milk Prices
EDM number 868 in 2006-07, proposed by Cheryl Gillan on 07/02/2007.
That this House notes with concern the growing crisis in the Welsh dairy sector; further notes that the price received by farmers for their milk is some four pence per litre less than its cost of production; is concerned that, on average, three dairy farms in Wales go out of business each week with consequent detriment to Welsh communities and local economies; and urges the Government to give urgent consideration to the matters highlighted by the Low Milk Prices Have a High Cost campaign launched by the Farmers' Union of Wales, National Farmers Union Cymru, Welsh Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, Women's Food and Farming Union, Welsh Federation of Women's Institutes and Merched y Wawr.
