Glasgow University And The Crichton Campus
EDM number 799 in 2006-07, proposed by David Mundell on 31/01/2007.
That this House deplores the threat by Glasgow University to withdraw from the Crichton Campus in Dumfries, where it has played a vital role in establishing a unique and innovative multi-institution tertiary education facility; notes the importance of the Crichton Campus not only to the social and cultural wellbeing of Dumfries and Galloway, but also to the future regeneration of the economy; commends the Campus' real achievement in delivering accessible flexible lifelong learning to people in Dumfries and Galloway who would not otherwise be able to take up higher and further education opportunities; regrets that such students seem to be of so little value to Glasgow University; believes that both the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Funding Council have significant roles to play in reaching a resolution; calls on them and Glasgow University to end their approach of bandying about dubious figures, blaming each other, shirking their responsibilities and pursuing their own agendas at the expense of current and prospective students on the Campus; and urges all those parties to work to ensure that the Crichton Campus remains a centre of excellence with Glasgow University as a willing and enthusiastic participant.
