Bovine Tuberculosis
EDM number 45 in 2006-07, proposed by James Paice on 15/11/2006.
That this House notes with concern that bovine tuberculosis (TB) in cattle now costs the taxpayer £90 million per annum and that 30,000 cattle were slaughtered in England and Wales last year because of it; deplores the lack of a comprehensive strategy to tackle the disease; believes that greater efficiency in tracing and testing cattle, the urgent trialling of vaccines and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test and targeted measures to deal with the reservoir of infection in wildlife are urgently required and will reduce the cost to the taxpayer; and calls on the Government to take the practical measures necessary to reduce the toll of bovine TB on wildlife, cattle and the British farming industry.
