Religious Intolerance
EDM number 353 in 2006-07, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 29/11/2006.
That this House notes that the month of November marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the 1981 UN Declaration on the Elimination of Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief; recognises that the anniversary is particularly timely with the rising tide of intolerance in many countries; further notes the intolerance of Christianity in China, India and Pakistan; notes in particular the intolerance practised in China whereby bishops and journalists are being arrested; and calls on the Government to work through the UN in order to implement the principles of the Declaration which forbids discrimination on the basis of religion and belief, and reminds states of their duty not only to prohibit such discrimination but to take effective measures to prevent and eliminate it.
