Food Supplements Directive
EDM number 229 in 2006-07, proposed by Stephen O'Brien on 22/11/2006.
That this House notes that the European Commission is currently considering the responses that it has received to its recent consultation document on the setting of maximum permitted levels for vitamins and minerals in food supplements; further notes that the Commission in 2007 will bring formal proposals for legally binding limits on the levels of such nutrients in supplements; reminds the Prime Minister of his own observation that this legislation is `wholly out of proportion' and of his commitment to ensure that United Kingdom consumers do not lose their access to safe and popular higher potency food supplements; believes that these objectives will not be achieved without a redoubling of the Government's lobbying efforts in Brussels and with other member states; and calls upon Ministers to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to defend the interests of the United Kingdom specialist natural health product industry and its consumers.
