BBC In Scotland

EDM number 2134 in 2006-07, proposed by Pete Wishart on 16/10/2007.

That this House notes with concern the expected announcement by the BBC Director General of up to 2,800 job cuts across the Corporation; expresses alarm that these cuts will impact detrimentally and disproportionately on programme quality and production by BBC Scotland which, according to union leaders, is not well placed to take more losses; urges BBC management to take account of the distinct economic, cultural and democratic importance of broadcasting to Scotland and take steps to safeguard Scottish output; and recognises that this situation underlines the importance of the Broadcasting Commission, established by the Scottish Government, which is currently undertaking an independent investigation into television production and broadcasting in Scotland with a view to defining a strategic way forward for the industry.
